Career planning is an ongoing process of choosing a career that fits with one’s unique set of interests, abilities and values. This lifelong process includes choosing an occupation, getting a job, growing with the job and possibly changing careers. This planning is important because it helps an individual to focus and make decisions for living. It directs, motivates and helps to accomplish the goals. Through this, one discovers his/her talents, skills and abilities and matches them with available possibilities.
Steps in Career Planning
There are five steps in career planning:
- Self Assessment
Self Assessment involves knowing one’s interests, values, skills, aptitude, abilities, personality traits and preferences for particular environment. This generally is a reflection of one’s personality.
- Exploring Career Options
Exploration of career options includes researching various aspects of a career, nature of work, working conditions, education and skill requirement, and job prospects.
- Identifying Academic Institutions
Identification of institutions is a process of selecting the best academic institution for acquiring the desired qualification.
- Financial Planning
Higher education and planning to study in a good institution not only requires good results but also requires strong financial support and its planning. This includes exploring scholarship options, loans, insurance policies and other avenues of funding. - institution for acquiring the desired qualification.
- Goal Setting
Goal setting gives confidence that one is in charge of his/her career and life and has the power to decide, act, and do what he/she wants to accomplish in life.
