Careers in Law

Overview: 

Law is an integral part of nearly every area of our lives—from the environment, trade and commerce, and civil rights to national security, cyberspace and entertainment the more developed a legal order, the more demands and responsibilities are placed upon its legal professionals. The legal professional can be divided into two major categories:
  • Advocates: As advocates, lawyer represent one of the parties in criminal and civil trials by presenting evidence and arguing in court to support their client
  • Advisors: As advisors, lawyers council their clients concerning their legal rights and obligations and suggest particular course of action in business and personal matters. It is related to business and personal matters that usually do not require courtroom argumentation.
Area of Study:
  • Criminal law – Criminal lawyers specialise in matters having legal implications such as theft, murder and arson which are considered offences against society or the State.
  • Real estate – Real estate lawyers deal with cases involving property.
  • Civil law – Civil Law operates in matters of property, contract and commercial issues, inheritance, family and corporations.
  • Tax law – Tax lawyers handle cases concerning income tax, wealth tax, gift tax, estate duty, etc.
  • International law – A set of international legal rules are observed by all the nations in relation to one another.
  • Family Law– It involves arranging for people day to day family issues, such as adoption, divorce, and wills.
  • Corporate/ Commercial Law. This is the biggest field of practice. Corporate law involves organizing businesses, mostly contracts, liability, or intellectual property
  • Labour law – Labour lawyers specialise in solving the problems arising between the management and the labour force in any organisation.
  • Intellectual Property Law is the law of copyrights, trademarks, and patents. It is a budding area of law what with the internet, and with the increased use of computers and computer software.
  • Others – Immigration law, constitutional law, excise law, customs and transportation, Environment law, Banking Law etc.

Some colleges/ university offer 1 year diploma in specific area of law.

Required Attributes:
  • Fluency, clear speech and excellent presentation skills are essential.
  • Ability to persuade and convince people
  • A good intellect, ability to assimilate and analyze facts, distinguishes the relevant from the irrelevant, screen evidence, and applies the law to the situation under scrutiny.
  • A self confident and an unbiased approach are expected from lawyers.
  • Integrity, character and mental and physical stamina are what lawyers need.
  • Lawyers must be detail-oriented, natural negotiators who enjoy research. And they must also have a high tolerance for tedium—there can be a lot of paperwork involved.
Prospects:
Law graduate held positions in government or with corporations or non-profit organisations. Mostly law graduates practiced privately, either as partners in law firms or in solo practitioner. Many salaried lawyers working outside of government are employed as house counsel by public utilities, banks, insurance companies, real estate agencies, manufacturing firms, and other business firms and non-profit organisations. Law graduate can work for following positions:
  • Lawyer
  • Solicitor
  • Judge
  • Legal Executive
  • Legal Advisor
  • Notaries
  • Law Professor
