Careers in Library and Information Sciences Overview:  Librarians are information managers. They manage information; and adapt new technology to facilitate better access to information and knowledge. Library work involves three basic functions: User services: To help users find the information they need. Technical services: Acquire and prepare materials for use. Select and purchase materials from publishers, wholesalers and distributors. e. Prepare the budget and oversee other administrative matters.
