Financing Education for UK

I. The Shell Centenary Scholarship Fund:

The Shell Centenary Scholarship Fund (TSCSF) was established as a registered charity in 1997. Under various Masters programmes, TSCSF offers postgraduate students from developing countries the opportunity to study in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, and gain skills that will make a long-term contribution to the further development of their countries. Each year nearly 90 students will be given major scholarships (for one year in the UK, and for two years in NL). Partners in the scheme are the University of Cambridge, Durham University, The University of Edinburgh, Imperial College London, University of Leeds, The University of Oxford and University College London in the UK, and with Delft University of Technology, Eindhoven University of Technology and University of Twente in the Netherlands. These universities also contribute to the funding of scholarships. The scholarships are known as Shell Centenary Scholarships (in the UK), Royal Dutch Shell Centenary Scholarships (in the NL). A number of scholarships are also jointly funded with the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and are known as Shell Centenary Chevening Scholarships.

1. Eligibility criteria:

Aged 35 or under
nationals of and resident in any country other than Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany; Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy; Japan, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway; Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and United States and intending to return and take up permanent residence there after completion of the proposed programme of study
intending to study a subject that will be of significant value in aiding the sustainable development of their home country
of outstanding academic ability e.g. have obtained a degree equivalent to a first class honours degree at a British university
fluent in spoken and written English (IELTS: 7.5)
neither a current nor former employee of the Royal Dutch/Shell Group of Companies

2. Value of scholarship: Each full-cost scholarship will cover tuition, accommodation, maintenance costs and a return airfare for the scholarship holder only.

3. How to apply:

Request information about eligible taught postgraduate courses from one, or more, of the six participating universities
Request an application form and a scholarship form from the university at which one wishes to study
Apply, on the university application form, for admission to one of the eligible courses.
Closing dates for academic entrance applications vary
Send a completed scholarship form to the university to which one has applied

It is the intention that the scholarships be widely geographically distributed. In each year a large number of countries will be represented. Scholarships will be awarded to those academically qualified applicants thought best able to contribute to the development of their home country by becoming leaders, decision-makers or opinion-formers. Preference will be given to those who have not yet had the opportunity to study in the UK and NL.

4. Subjects offered: The courses which are eligible for Shell Centenary, Shell Centenary Chevening and Royal Dutch Shell Centenary Scholarships are within the broad categories of Applied Sciences and Technology, including Environmental Sciences, Business Management, Law and Economics. Specific disciplines and subjects vary from one university to another. Courses can also vary from one year to another so there is no guarantee that the same course will be available each year. II. British Chevening Scholarship:

The British Government’s British Chevening Scholarship, are the most prestigious awards available to international students for study in the United Kingdom. They enable future leaders, decision-makers and opinion formers from around the world to become familiar with the UK, to gain new skills, or update current professional skills. The ultimate objective is to benefit their countries upon their return.

1. Eligibility: Mid-career professionals with a minimum of 3 years' relevant work experience

Applicants must have a Master’s degree or a 4-year Bachelor’s degree
Applicants must be under 40 years of age at the time of applying.
Applicants should preferably not have studied in the UK at university level.
Applicants must be Pakistan citizens
Applicants may apply in any subject area
Minimum IELTS of 6.5 although 7.0 is preferred

2. Duration: The scholarships are for one year taught postgraduate study in the UK.

3. Priority Areas: Business Administration, Design, Economics, Environmental Studies, Human rights, International Relations, Law, Management, Media Studies, Public Administration, Social Development.

4. Value: The scholarship covers the full cost of study in the UK.

5. How to apply: Application forms are available from the British Council offices in Pakistan. If writing to obtain an application form, enclose a stamped addressed envelope.

6. Timeline: The British Chevening Scholarships Programme in Pakistan is advertised every year in August, with interviews in November and successful scholars departing for the UK next September.

III. DFID Shared Scholarships:

Awards made under this scheme are jointly funded by the Department for International Development (DFID), as part of the British aid programme to developing countries, and participating institutions in the United Kingdom. The Scheme is administered by the Association of Commonwealth Universities, 36 Gordon Square, London WC1H 0PF.

1. Number of Awards: 180 (approx)

2. Courses offered: The scholarships fund courses at postgraduate or equivalent level at selected institutions in the UK. A list of the institutions is available, and changes year to year. Scholarships are available for subjects connected to development, such as economics, social sciences and technology. Sometimes a scholarship is awarded for undergraduate study if the course satisfies the conditions of the scheme and is not available in Pakistan. There are no awards for PhD level.

3. Eligibility:

National of (or permanently domiciled in) a commonwealth developing country, and not at present living or studying in a developed country
Not be employed by a government department (national or local) or by a parastatal organisation
Have not undertaken studies lasting a year or more in a developed country
Will return to their home country as soon as their award ends
Themselves, or through their families, are unable to pay to study in the United Kingdom

4. Type of Funding: Covers full costs of an award holder's study in the UK including return airfares, maintenance allowance. No additional allowances are paid for spouses or other dependants.

5. How to apply: Applications should be made directly to the institutions at which candidates wish to study. The sponsoring institution will be the judges of academic calibre and forward their nominations to the Association of Commonwealth Universities for its agreement. Institutions will normally advise candidates of the result not later than June. Candidates should note that although they may apply to more than one institution, only one offer of award may be accepted.

IV. Cambridge Commonwealth Trust, Cambridge Overseas Trust and Cambridge Livingstone Trust:

1. Eligibility: The trust offers scholarships and part-time bursaries to outstanding students from overseas who, without help, would be unable to take their places at Cambridge. Students must already have been accepted for admission by the University. Scholarships are normally attached to particular countries, levels of study and in some cases to specific areas of study.

3. Costs covered: The trusts do not provide maintenance allowances for dependants. Bursaries are available to students irrespective of their nationality. Accordingly, applicants from countries not specified under the scholarship scheme will normally be eligible to be considered for a part-cost bursary. The value of the bursary will be a partial contribution towards the costs of study at Cambridge and is determined according to the financial circumstances of each candidate.

The trust states that since there are many more applications than awards available, students should apply for every other form of financial assistance open to them, including UK Government awards, Cambridge College awards and awards from sources in their home countries.

V. Rhodes Scholarships:

The Rhodes Scholarships, the oldest international fellowships, were initiated after the death of Cecil Rhodes in 1902, and bring outstanding students from many countries around the world to the University of Oxford. The Rhodes Scholarships are investments in individuals rather than in project proposals. Accordingly, applications are sought from talented students without restriction as to their field of academic specialization or career plans although the proposed course of study must be available at Oxford, and the applicant’s undergraduate programme must provide a sufficient basis for further study in the proposed field. Through the years, Rhodes Scholars have pursued studies in all of the varied fields available at the University of Oxford. Rhodes Scholars are elected for two years of study at the University of Oxford, with the possibility of renewal for a third year, which requires application to and express approval of the Rhodes Trustees. Rhodes Scholars may pursue a one-year degree, diploma, or certificate in the first instance, as long as it is part of a plan for two or three years of Oxford study involving a subsequent degree course. Rhodes Scholars may not, however, apply in the first instance for an MBA. 1. Costs covered:All educational costs, such as tuition, laboratory and certain other fees are paid on the Scholar’s behalf by the Rhodes Trustees. Each Scholar receives in addition a maintenance allowance adequate to meet necessary expenses for term-time and vacations. The Rhodes Trustees cover the necessary costs of travel to and from Oxford, and upon application, may approve additional grants for research purposes or study-related travel.

VI. Gates Foundation: In October 2000, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation of Seattle, Washington, USA announced a donation to the University of Cambridge of $210 million to establish the Gates Cambridge Trust. This benefaction creates in perpetuity an international scholarship programme to enable outstanding graduate students from outside the United Kingdom to study at the University of Cambridge.

1. About the scholarships: The Trust expects there to be of the order of 230 Gates Cambridge Scholars studying at the University at any one time, 100 of them coming from the United States of America. Although there may be variation in the actual number of awards made each year, the Trust seeks to elect approximately 100 new scholars annually.

2. Eligibility: In selecting Gates Cambridge Scholars, the Trust looks for students of exceptional academic achievement and scholarly promise for whom advanced study at Cambridge would be particularly appropriate. The Trust expects a good match to be made between the applicant's qualifications and aspirations and what Cambridge has to offer. Successful applicants will have the ability to make a significant contribution to their discipline while in Cambridge, with a strong aptitude for research, analysis and a creative approach to defining and solving problems. 3. 4. Costs covered: Gates Cambridge Scholarships are awarded only to students who gain admission to the University through the University's regular procedures. They cover the full cost of study at Cambridge for a single person - namely, all approved University and College tuition fees, a maintenance allowance, a further discretionary allowance for study-related activities and one return economy airfare between the UK and the Scholar’s normal country of residence.

VII. Annemarie Schimmel Scholarship (For Pakistani Women Only):

1. Period of award: The Schimmel Scholarship will be awarded for one or two years, depending on the course of study, at any reputable institution in Britain.

2. Subjects: It may be used for academic studies in the traditional humanities and sciences, or for training in fields such as education (curriculum planning, special needs, teaching English as a second language), public health, radiography, speech therapy or physiotherapy. Courses in economics development, social sciences modular courses in various disciplines will also be considered. Subjects excluded are journalism, business, media and women's studies.

3. Eligibility:

The candidate must have either a professional degree (e.g. MBBS) or a first or high second division in M.A. /M.Sc.
She must be a citizen of Pakistan and have a declared intention to return and pursue a career in Pakistan.
Preference will be given to candidates who have work experience in their chosen field. There is no restriction on age, but preference will be given to candidates between the ages of 25 and 40.
A genuine need for financial assistance is an essential condition of the scholarship. The candidate must supply adequate evidence that she would not be able to study abroad without financial assistance. Candidates must bear the expenses of air travel.
While not a requirement, preference will be given to those candidates who have secured admission to a programme of study at a recognized institution of their choice in the United Kingdom.

4. Value of Award It covers the full cost of tuition and basic living expenses. Travel expenses are not included.

VIII. Noon Educational Foundation:

The Noon Educational Foundation was established in 1992 by Lady Viqarunnissa Noon to support bright young scholars from Pakistan to study at leading universities in the United Kingdom, notably the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

1. Eligible Fields:

Criminology, Development Studies, Economics, Economics and Development, Education, Historical Studies, History and Philosophy of Science, International Relations, Law, Philosophy, Political Thought and Intellectual History, Social Anthropology.

2. Application and Selection Procedure:

The applications of Pakistani scholars who have gained admission to Oxford or Cambridge universities are forwarded to the Noon Educational Foundation (NEF) for consideration for scholarship awards. The NEF reviews the applications at their annual Summer Trustees' Meeting, usually early in July, and recommends appropriate ones to OSI–Budapest and the FCO for joint support.

3. Eligibility: Applicants should:

be nationals of, and normally resident in Pakistan during the academic year in which they apply for the award; applicants who are temporarily out of the country (for a total period of less than three consecutive months) may be treated as being resident
already hold (or expect to hold by the time of taking up the award) a degree equivalent to an upper second from a U.K. university
normally be between 20 and 33 years of age
have passed an appropriate English language test by the time of taking up the award
preferably have not already spent a full academic year or more studying in a higher educational institution in the West
return to their home country at the end of their scholarship period to continue their studies/work there

In addition, the following are ineligible to apply:

employees of the British Embassies and the British Council offices who are directly involved in the administration of scholarships
those who have received a scholarship funded by the British Government within the previous three years.

IX. The British Council/Charles Wallace Trust:

The Visiting Fellowship Programme is designed to provide assistance to individuals who wish to broaden their experience or improve their skills through a short-term attachment at a UK university or training institution.

1. Subjects: Arts, Literature, Design, English Language Teaching, Education, Management and Administration, Human Rights, Gender issues

2. Eligibility: The Programme is designed to support applicants who demonstrate a strong desire to visit the UK in order to enhance their skills, and who can clearly show that all other arrangements for their training have been made. They should also meet the following criteria:

Pakistani Nationals, resident in Pakistan
Must be aged between 25 and 45 years
Must have a firm offer (up to 3 months) from a UK University or training institution

3. Value: Award holders will receive a grant of £920 per month for a maximum of 3 months. The scheme does not support:

Travel to the UK to attend conference and seminars
The cost of international airfares
Tuition fees
Subjects not included in the priority areas
Administrative assistance

X. University of Cambridge - 800th Anniversary Scholarships for Applicants from Pakistan:

1. Introduction: The University has introduced a new scholarship scheme for applicants for undergraduate admission from Pakistan for 2010 entry onwards. The scholarships will cover the cost of your tuition fees and College fees together with a grant towards maintenance and travel costs for each year of your course. The maintenance element of the scholarship will take account of your financial circumstances.

2. Eligibility Criteria:

Candidate should be school-leavers from Pakistan who meet the usual examination qualifications for admission to Cambridge.
Applicants for all courses except Medicine and Veterinary Medicine are eligible to apply.
The scholarships are not available if you already have a degree and are therefore applying to Cambridge as an affiliated applicant.
Candidate should provide college offer of a place to study at Cambridge, including meeting any immigration and English language requirements.
Continuation of the scholarship from year to year will be conditional on satisfactory examination performance.

3. How to apply:

Complete a scholarship application form (which will be made available on the Undergraduate Admissions website in due course) and apply for a place at Cambridge in the usual way
Submit a UCAS application and a Cambridge Overseas Application Form (COAF) together with your scholarship application form

XI. London School of Economics and Political Science - Undergraduate Scholarship Programme:

Three Pakistani Undergraduate Scholarships available for those starting an undergraduate programme in 2009/10. Each scholarship has a value of £20,000 and is renewable, subject to satisfactory academic performance, for the second and third years of study.

1. Eligibility:

The scholarship is available for study on any undergraduate degree programme at LSE. It will be awarded on the basis of financial need only.

Other Scholarships managed/promoted by British Council Pakistan:

a. Hornby Long Term Award:

The A S Hornby Trust funds scholarships for ELT professionals from Pakistan (one scholar sent every year). The award is for a diploma (9 months) or MA (1 year) course. Placement will be made in one of the following UK universities, all of which have a high reputation in the field – University of Lancaster, University of Leeds, College of St Mark and St John, Plymouth, Stirling University, University of Warwick. Eligible courses for these scholarships are only fulltime UK-based TEFL/TESL diploma or Masters programme in these institutions. The scholarship covers tuition fees, a monthly stipend for accommodation and living expenses. Applicants should have more than three years of professional experience in ELT.

b. LSE Graduate Merit Awards:

Students who apply for admission to a Master's programme at LSE which charges fees of £7,481 or above, will be considered for a Graduate Merit Award. The most outstanding applicants who have impressed the selectors with the quality of their application and academic achievement will be offered an award, the value of these awards ranges from £3,000 to £8,000. c. Nottingham Developing Solutions:

Nottingham's Developing Solutions Scholarship Scheme operates throughout the developing Commonwealth to encourage gifted students from developing nations to take advantage of Nottingham University's world-class research and taught courses in a number of scientific and technical disciplines. These scholarships enable students to apply and transfer their expertise and knowledge gained at Nottingham to the problems facing developing nations. Awards are for one-year postgraduate studies in Crop Sciences, Food and Nutrition, Engineering and Environmental Management.

d. Dorothy Hodgkin’s Scholarships:

The Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Awards are open to top quality science, engineering, medicine, social sciences and technology students from overseas to study for PhDs over a period of three to four years, at an average annual cost per student of £25,000 (up to an overall maximum of £75,000 per student) primarily to cover fees and maintenance. The overriding criterion of the scheme is excellence, and DHPA scholars should be easily recognizable as the 'best of the best'. One Research Council and one industrial partner will jointly fund each scholarship. e. 50th Anniversary Strathclyde:

To commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Foundation of the State of Pakistan, the University of Strathclyde awards one or two scholarships from funds donated by Mr Yaqub Ali through the Scottish Pakistani Association to the University of Strathclyde Foundation. The aim of the Fund is to provide an opportunity to well qualified but needy Pakistan nationals (living in Pakistan) to pursue a one-year MSc study course in the UK. Priority will be given to subjects in the areas of engineering, computing and business management or any other subject which the partners deem acceptable or which cannot be pursued adequately in Pakistan. Applicants must have a First Class Honours degree from a recognised Pakistan University. Preference will be given to candidates who have relevant work experience and have not previously studied in the UK. The Foundation will meet the full costs of the candidate's study, including return travel, maintenance and other allowances (excluding spouse or other dependants).

f. Bank of England:

In 2003/04, Trustees of the Bank of England offered to Pakistan two fellowships for one-year postgraduate (Master’s) studies in the fields of banking, debt management, financial administration or a related subject. The fellowships cover return airfare; tuition fees, monthly stipend, books and warm clothing allowance, and are tenable at approved universities in the UK. Applicants should be under 40 years of age, working in the field of banking and finance, have an indigenous Master’s degree (preferably in Finance, Economics or Business Administration) and possess at least 3-5 years of banking experience, preferably from a Pakistani commercial bank. Employees of international banks are excluded from this programme.

g. OSI/FCO Chevening Royal Holloway University Scholarships:

The scholarships aim to provide opportunities for independent postgraduate study in the United Kingdom for students from Pakistan who are engaged in or intending to pursue postgraduate work in their own country and who have demonstrated both academic excellence and the potential to become leaders, decision-makers and opinion formers in their own country. Subject to satisfactory progress, the scholarships lead to the award of a Masters. Scholarships are available for study for one of the following: M.Sc. in public sector studies, M.A. in politics of democracy or M.Sc. in medical sociology. Each scholarship provides tuition fees at the Royal Holloway, University of London, a stipend to cover living costs (for one person only) and return air travel from the scholar's home country. Applicants will normally be expected to:

be a national of, and normally resident in Pakistan during the academic year in which they apply for the award; applicants who are temporarily out of the country (for a total period of less than three consecutive months) may be treated as being resident;

h. FCO/ British Gas/ University of Strathclyde:

The British Gas and the University of Strathclyde, together with the Foreign and Commonwealth office, are offering up to eight one-year postgraduate studentships per annum in selected office in Engineering, Applied Science and Business Administration. Awards include the costs of the candidate's study in the UK including airfares. Application forms can be obtained from the British Council offices in Pakistan. i. FCO/BUNZL/Cranfield Shared Scholarship Scheme:

1. Eligibility The application for admission will be processed by the University in the normal way. Students who are accepted on to a master’s course will then be put forward for a Scholarship.

2. How to apply Candidates who wish to apply for a scholarship in engineering field should write for course details and an application form to one of the contact addresses which are available at the British Council Karachi.

3. Deadline On completion, the application form should be sent to the Registrar of the Cranfield university at the address on the form before 19 March for the course starting in October of the same year. A short of potential scholars will be drawn up by a committee consisting of members from Bunzl, The Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Cranfield. The local Bunzl offices may hold interviews before the final decisions are made. Successful candidates will be notified by end June for courses starting the following October.

k. OSI/FCO Chevening Royal Holloway University Scholarships:

The scholarships aim to provide opportunities for independent postgraduate study in the United Kingdom for students from Pakistan who are engaged in or intending to pursue postgraduate work in their own country and who have demonstrated both academic excellence and the potential to become leaders, decision-makers and opinion formers in their own country. q. Scottish Universities Studentship Programme SUPA
The SUPA Prize Studentships are prestigious and competitive awards intended to attract outstanding physics students from around the world, irrespective of nationality, to study for a PhD in Scotland. The studentships provide support for tuition fees and a maintenance grant of £14,000 per year for a three-and-a-half-year period. There will be no requirement to teach associated with these positions. Prize studentships will be awarded competitively and up to eight awards will be available this year for outstanding candidates.
SUPA is the funding body for the prize studentships. Applicants are advised that they must also apply to their chosen university to undertake a PhD and must meet the minimum requirements of that institution.
