Financing Education for USA

I. Fulbright / USAID Fellowship Student Programme (Master's Programme): 
This programme will fund up to two years of graduate study in the United States for a Master's degree programme. Successful candidates will begin their programme of study in fall. In addition to academic work, persons selected are expected to share information about Pakistani life and culture with their U.S. colleagues and with community groups in the U.S. On returning to Pakistan, Fulbright scholars are expected to share their U.S. experiences with colleagues and community groups in Pakistan. All disciplines are welcome to apply, with the exception of clinical medical fields. Priority will be given to the pure and applied sciences, agriculture, health, economics, teaching of English, education and fields related to economic development. The grant funds tuition, required textbooks, airfare, a living stipend, and health insurance. USEFP will assist with the visa application process. Successful applicants must be committed to serving Pakistan in the public, NGO, or private sector. It is highly desirable that candidates have work experience in teaching, research, or the public sector in Pakistan. They must be Pakistani citizens with a strong academic history and an M.A., M.Sc., or comparable degree (a minimum of 16 years of formal education) from an accredited university. Successful candidates should be poised to assume a leadership. Persons with a dual U.S./Pakistan nationality or who have a parent or child over 18 years of age who is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident are ineligible. Employees of the Fulbright organization, the U.S. Department of State, or USAID are also ineligible. Please note that GRE and TOEFL scores must be submitted along with the application. Applicants must possess a high level of fluency in spoken and written English. The minimum TOEFL score required is 220. On the GRE, a minimum score of 300 is required on each section of the examination, with a higher score on the section most applicable to the applicant’s field of study may apply to both the masters and Ph.D. programme. USEFP reserves the right to award grants in the programme it considers most appropriate.

II. Fulbright / HEC / USAID Student Programme- (PhD Programmes): The majority of funding for this programme is provided by the Higher Education Commission of the Government of Pakistan. For 2008, this programme will fund up to four years of graduate study in the United States towards a Ph.D. degree. This may be coursework and/or research towards a Ph.D. or an entire programme. Successful candidates will begin their programme of study. in the fall of 2008. In addition to academic work, persons selected are expected to share information about Pakistani life and culture with their U.S. colleagues and with community groups in the U.S. On returning to Pakistan, Fulbright scholars are expected to share their U.S. experiences with colleagues and community groups in Pakistan. All disciplines are welcome to apply, with the exception of clinical medical fields. This bond is redeemable on a year-for-year basis after returning to work in Pakistan. Employees of the Fulbright organization, the U.S. Department of State, USAID or the HEC are also ineligible. Please note that GRE and TOEFL scores must be submitted along with the application. III. American Association of University Women (AAUW) Educational Foundation International Fellowships: 

1. Eligibility
 To be eligible for an International Fellowship, one must meet the following requirements:

  • One must be a citizen in a country other than the United States, or must hold a non-immigrant visa if he/she resides in the United States.
  • One must complete an academic degree equivalent to a bachelor's degree from a U.S. college or university by the time of application and no later than Dec. 31.
  • One must intend to devote oneself full time to the proposed academic plan during the fellowship year.
  • One must intend to return to the home country to pursue a professional career.

IV. The Ivanhoe Foundation: The Ivanhoe Foundation grants Fellowships to needy and deserving students from developing countries. These students must be studying at a U.S. university for a practical Master of Science degree in engineering or science, with an emphasis on water resources. Awards are to be made without regard to race, colour, creed, or sex. 
1. Fund restrictions
 Awards are for Masters only.

  • No assistance will be provided for doctoral (Ph.D.) study.
  • Awards are made to individuals studying at U.S. universities. None of the awards provide institutional overhead.
  • Once a student is accepted, the Fellowships funds may be used at the student's discretion for educational needs, living expenses, or family emergencies.  
Ivanhoe Fellowships of $5000 per recipient will be available each year in the Masters programme, providing satisfactory work is being done each semester towards the completion of the degree.

V. Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Programme:
 
The United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP) invites applications from interested Pakistani nationals for the Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (Flta) Programme. Selected FLTAs from Pakistan will teach Urdu, Pashto or Punjabi at selected U.S. campuses during their 9-month grant beginning in fall 2009. 

1. Eligibility criteria
 Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Must be a citizen of Pakistan with a valid Pakistani passport. (Persons with a dual U.S./Pakistani nationality or who have a parent, spouse, fiancé or child over 18 years of age who is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident are ineligible, as are employees of the Fulbright organization or the U.S. Department of State.)
  • Must be residing in Pakistan throughout the nomination and selection process.
  • Must be no younger than 21 and no older than 29 at the time of application.
  • Fluency in English is mandatory. A minimum of 220 (CBT) or 90 (iBT) on TOEFL is required.
  • Must possess a minimum of 16 years of formal education by June 2009.
  • Must be English language teachers at the college or university level, or training to become English language teachers.
  • Prior teaching experience is preferred.
2 .Grant benefits All FLTA fellows receive a monthly stipend, health insurance and travel support. U.S. host institutions provide tuition awards to support the required coursework. Accompanying dependents are not allowed, as participants will live in dormitories on campus.
