The following areas help to produce a successful team that creates effective and focused work environment.
- Clear Expectations: Leadership needs to clearly communicate its expectations for the team’s performance and expected outcomes. Also ensure that team members understand why the team was created? The organization should demonstrate constancy of purpose in supporting the team with resources of people, time and money. Does the work of the team receive sufficient emphasis as a priority in terms of time, discussion, attention and interest directed its way by executive leaders?
- Context: Team members should know and understand their purpose of participation. They should understand strategy of using teams will help the organization attain its communicated short or long term goals their importance as a member to the accomplishment of overall goals.
- Commitment: The commitment and participation of team members are very important for the team. Understanding of team’s mission is important for members, their commitment to accomplishing the team mission and expected outcomes, their contribution as valuable service to the organization and to their own careers and their excitement to be challenged by the opportunity.
- Competence: To accomplish mission, team requires appropriate participation from people. (As an example, in a process improvement, is each step of the process represented on the team. Therefore its members should have the knowledge, skill and capability to address the issues for which the team was formed. If not, the team should have access to resources, strategies and support needed to accomplish its mission.
- Charter: The team’s mission is based on its assigned area of responsibility. Has the team defined and communicated its goals; its anticipated outcomes and contributions; its timelines; and how it will measure both the outcomes of its work and the process the team followed to accomplish their task?
- Collaboration: Team building is a group process and all team members should understand the roles and responsibilities of each others.Effective interpersonal interaction is very necessary for conflict resolution, decision making and in accomplishing some action plan.
- Creative Innovation: The leadership should encourage change and innovation and the team should come up with creative thinking, unique solutions, and new ideas. In addition people who take reasonable risks, initiatives and maintain the status quo should be rewarded.
- Coordination: Team’s coordination by a central leadership assists the group to obtain what they need for success. Therefore, the resources and responsibilities should allocate on an earlier stage to ensure that the assigned areas are functioning in right flow.
