Careers in Metallurgy and Material Engineering

Overview:
Metallurgy and Materials engineering is the science and technology of producing, processing and giving proper shape to metals and alloys and other engineering materials. Metallurgical Engineering is a broad field that deals with all sorts of metal-related areas and the three main branches of this major are physical metallurgy, extractive metallurgy, and mineral processing.
  • Physical metallurgy deals with developing the sorts of metallic alloys needed for different types of manufacturing and construction.
  • Extractive metallurgy involves extracting metal from ore.
  • Mineral processing involves gathering mineral products from the earth’s crust.
Materials and metallurgical engineers are involved in the extraction, development, processing, and testing of the materials used to create a wide variety of products. They work with metals, ceramics, plastics, semiconductors, and combinations of materials called composites to create new materials that meet certain mechanical, electrical, and chemical requirements.

Metallurgical and materials engineers perform some or all of the following duties:
  • Conduct studies and design, develop and specify the processes, and machinery to concentrate, extract, refine and process metals from ores
  • Conduct studies on the properties and characteristics of materials and design, develop and specify processes for moulding, shaping, forming and thermal treatment of metals, alloys and metallic systems, ceramics, semi conducting and other materials
