Careers in Biotechnology, Biochemistry and Genetics

Biotechnology:

Biotechnology is one of the most exciting fields today. It is the branch of molecular biology that studies the use of microorganisms to perform specific industrial processes. Biotechnology deals with the technique that uses living organisms, or parts of organisms, to make or modify products, improve plants or animals, or to develop microorganisms for specific uses. As such, biotechnology has applications in pharmacology, medicine, agriculture, and many other fields. To prepare for a career in biotechnology, a person should learn as much as possible about biology, chemistry, and other life sciences. Since the career involves research, one must have an academic bent of mind. One has to be hard working and willing to put in a lot of effort in experiments.

Biochemistry:

Biochemists study the chemical composition of living things. They analyze the complex chemical combinations and reactions involved in metabolism, reproduction, growth, and heredity  Biochemists study such things as the structures and physical properties of biological molecules, including proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids; the mechanisms of enzyme action; the chemical regulation of metabolism; the chemistry of nutrition; the molecular basis of genetics (inheritance); the chemistry of vitamins; energy utilization in the cell;  the chemistry of the immune response.

Genetics:

Genetics is the branch of biology that deals with heredity, especially the mechanisms of hereditary transmission and the variation of inherited characteristics among similar or related organisms. Molecular genetics is the field of biology which studies the structure and function of genes.
