| Careers in Internal Auditing Overview: Internal auditing is an independent appraisal function established within an organisationorganisation to examine and evaluate the adequacy and effectiveness of the organisation's internal control system and its overall quality of performance. Internal auditors verify the accuracy of their organisation’s internal records and check for mismanagement, waste, or fraud. They also review company operations, evaluating their efficiency, effectiveness, and compliance with corporate policies and procedures, laws, and government regulations. For career advancement internal auditors usually do certification. The IIA's Certified Internal Auditor® (CIA®) certification is the only globally accepted designation for internal auditors. The Certified Internal Auditor CIA, certification is provided by Institute of Internal Auditing IIA. CIA is enduring because it requires candidates to master the ability to identify risks, examine alternative remedies, and prescribe the best initiatives to control these risks. CIAs master auditing standards and practices as well as management principles and controls, information technology, and emerging strategies to improve business and government. The certification examination is conducted twice a year in May and November. For May exam the registration deadline is March 31 and for November exam the deadline is September 30. Certified Internal Auditor (CIA®) Exam Content: The Certified Internal Auditor® (CIA®) exam tests a candidate's knowledge of current internal auditing practices and understanding of internal audit issues, risks and remedies. The exam is offered in four parts, each part consisting of 125 multiple-choice questions. Parts I, II, and III are considered the core global syllabus of the CIA exam - offering a strong focus on corporate governance and risk issues and exhibiting alignment with The IIA's Professional Practices Framework. Part IV of the CIA exam is designed for modification for regional and audit testing. Hence, The IIA offers Professional Recognition Credit for Part IV (PRC-IV) for qualified professional certifications. Candidates may choose to take one or more exam parts at any time during the programme eligibility period, and in any order of preference. For example, a candidate may elect to begin by taking Part III and then proceed to take other parts. Another candidate may elect to take Parts I and II during one exam cycle and then the remaining parts at a later date. Or a candidate may choose to take all four parts during one exam cycle. The choice is yours to make.
Education: Certified Internal Auditor® (CIA®) candidates must hold a bachelor's degree or its equivalent from an accredited college-level institution. Work experience will not substitute for an appropriate degree. A copy of the candidate's diploma, transcripts, or other written proof of completion of a degree programme must accompany the candidate's application. CIA candidates must complete 24 months of internal auditing experience or its equivalent. Equivalent experience means experience in audit/assessment disciplines, including external auditing, quality assurance, compliance, and internal control. A master's degree or work experience in related business professions (such as accounting, law, or finance) can be substituted for one year of experience. Candidates may sit for the CIA exam prior to satisfying the professional experience requirement, but they will not be certified until the experience requirement has been met. CIA candidates must exhibit high moral and professional character and submit a character reference form completed by a CIA, their supervisor, manager, or educator with their registration. Continuing Professional Education: Upon certification, CIAs are required to maintain their knowledge and skills and to stay abreast of improvements and current developments in internal auditing standards, procedures, and techniques. Practicing CIAs must complete and report 80 hours of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) every two years. The IIA requires immediate credit card payment (Visa, MasterCard or American Express) for all electronically submitted applications. Candidates may then forward the proof of eligibility documents by mail or fax as soon as possible. Candidates who wish to submit a printed version of the online application or a printed brochure application form by mail or fax must include payment by check or credit card along with the required proof of eligibility documents with their application form. The IIA cannot guarantee a candidate's right to sit for the CIA exam if payment and all the required documentation is not received.
