Careers in Physics

Overview:
Physics is a fundamental science that explores and identify basic principles and laws governing motion and gravitation, the macroscopic and microscopic behaviour of gases, and the structure and behaviour of matter, the generation and transfer between energy, and the interaction of matter and energy. Some physicists use these principles in theoretical areas; others apply their knowledge of physics to practical areas, such as the development of advanced materials, electronic and optical devices, and medical equipment.
Physicists design and perform experiments with lasers, particle accelerators, telescopes, mass spectrometers, and other equipment. On the basis of their observations and analysis, they attempt to discover and explain laws describing the forces of nature, such as gravity, electromagnetism, and nuclear interactions. Physicists also find ways to apply physical laws and theories to problems in nuclear energy, electronics, optics, materials, communications, aerospace technology, and medical instrumentation.
The study of physic basically focuses on elementary particle physics, nuclear physics, atomic and molecular physics, and physics of condensed matter (solid-state physics), optics, acoustics, plasma physics, or the physics of fluids.

Required Attributes:
Mathematical ability, problem-solving and analytical skills, an inquisitive mind, imagination, and initiative are important traits for anyone planning a career in physics.
Interest in scientific phenomena, patience, perseverance, precision and tremendous inclination to research is must.
Good oral and written communication skills also are important because many physicists work as part of a team, write research papers or proposals, or have contact with clients or customers with non physics backgrounds.

Career Prospects:
  • In industries, physicists conduct research for improving methods and technologies.
  • In the petroleum industry, they are engaged in laboratory work for finding improved methods of processing crude oil
  • Geophysicists combine the knowledge of geology and physics. Geophysics is used in the study of meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, seismology, radioactivity and magnetism.
  • Medical physicists play a vital role in the designing and use of electronic equipments for use in the medical sector.
  • Physicist may also opt for teaching Profession.
