Careers in Mechanical Engineering

Overview:

Mechanical Engineering applies the knowledge of Physics and other sciences to the design, manufacture, installation, operation, maintenance and repair of all types of equipment and machinery, which may be used for generation of power, manufacture of many other devices/machines and processing of materials and goods. Mechanical engineers research, develop, design, manufacture, and test tools, engines, machines, and other mechanical devices. They work on power-producing machines such as electric generators, internal combustion engines, and steam and gas turbines, as well as power-using machines such as refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment, machine tools, material handling systems, elevators and escalators, industrial production equipment, and robots used in manufacturing. Mechanical engineers also design tools that other engineers need for their work. In mechanical Engineering student usually get to know about Mechanics of Materials, Thermodynamics, Hydraulic Machinery, Machine Design, Machine Tools, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Energy Resources and Utilization, Quality Control, Instrumentation and Control, Mechanical Vibration, Power Plants, Operation Research, and Production Management.

Working Condition:
Mechanical Engineers are employed in virtually every industry, with most working for manufacturing firms and consulting services.  Although some engineers spend most of their time in an office, many jobs require working part of the time in a plant, testing laboratory, machine shop, or installation site.  Mechanical engineers usually work regular hours, but may have to work longer hours to meet project deadlines. Mechanical engineers work independently and in teams, and may supervise small groups of staff.
