Careers in Mathematics and Statistics
Overview:
Mathematics is a
science that deals with the logic of quantities, measurement, structures
and shapes. It includes theoretical and applied studies of arithmetic,
algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus. The work of
mathematicians’ falls into two broad classes—theoretical (pure)
mathematics and applied mathematics.
Theoretical / Pure mathematic is the branch of mathematics
that study and develop the principles of mathematics for the reason
other than application. Theoretical mathematicians advance mathematical
knowledge by developing new principles and recognizing previously
unknown relationships between existing principles of mathematics.
Applied mathematics is a branch of
mathematics that concerns itself with the application of mathematical
knowledge to other domains. Applied mathematicians, use theories and
techniques, such as mathematical modelling and computational methods, to
formulate and solve practical problems in business, government,
engineering, and in the physical, life, and social sciences. For
example, they may analyze the most efficient way to schedule airline
routes between cities, or the cost-effectiveness of alternative
manufacturing processes. Applied mathematicians start with a practical
problem, envision the separate elements of the process under
consideration, and then reduce the elements to mathematical variables.
They often use computers to analyze relationships among the variables
and solve complex problems by developing models with alternative
solutions.
Statistics is the
scientific application of mathematical principles to the collection,
analysis, and presentation of numerical data. Statisticians contribute
to scientific inquiry by applying their mathematical and statistical
knowledge to the design of surveys and experiments; the collection,
processing, and analysis of data; and the interpretation of the results.
