Careers in Paramedical Fields

I. Radiology:
Overview:
Radiology is the branch of medicine that deals with the use of radioactive substances in diagnosis and treatment of disease. Radiotherapy is used for the treatment of cancer. Radiological technician or radiographer specialises in imaging techniques such as X-rays, CT scans, MRI scans, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, nuclear medicine and mammography etc.
Few hospital offer vocational training in radiology. Upon successful completion of training, trainees are given a certificate. This training also fulfils the eligibility criteria to appear for the examination that is held by the Sindh technical broad, Ministry of Health Sindh, Karachi.

II. Physiotherapy:

Overview:
Physical therapy or physiotherapy is the treatment of disorders of the muscles, bones, or joints by means of physical agents—heat, light, water, manual and electronic massage, and exercise. Stroke, arthritis, fractures, and nerve damage are common conditions treated. Trained Physiotherapist carry out physiotherapy to treat physical dysfunction or injury by the use of therapeutic exercise and application of modalities

III.
 Lab Technologist/ Technician:
Overview:
Clinical laboratory testing plays a crucial role in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. Clinical laboratory technologists are also referred as medical technologists, and clinical laboratory technicians. Clinical laboratory technologists perform complex chemical, biological, immunologic, microscopic, and bacteriological tests. Technologists microscopically examine blood and other body fluids. They make cultures of body fluid and tissue samples, to determine the presence of bacteria, fungi, parasites, or other microorganisms. They also analyze samples for chemical content or a chemical reaction and determine concentrations of compounds such as blood glucose and cholesterol levels. They also type and cross match blood samples for transfusions.

IV. Diet Technician
:
Overview:
Diet technician assist dieticians in the provision of food service and nutritional programmes. Under the supervision of dieticians, they may plan and produce meals based on established guidelines, teach principles of food and nutrition, or counsel individuals. The eligibility criteria to enrol for diet technician training programme at AKUH are MSc degree in home economics nutrition or food science.  After completing the training they may hired as assistant clinical dietician.

V. Medical Transcriptionist:

Overview:
Medical transcriptionist listen to dictated recordings made by physicians and other health care professionals and transcribe them into medical reports, correspondence, and other administrative material. The documents they produce include discharge summaries, history and physical examination reports, operative reports, consultation reports, autopsy reports, diagnostic imaging studies, progress notes, and referral letters.

VI.
 Nursing Assistant:
Overview:
Nursing assistant also known as nursing aides perform routine task under the supervision of nursing and medical staff. They usually take patient’s temperature, pulse rate, respiration rate, and blood pressure; make bed and help them to get into and out of bed and walk, escort patients to operating and examining rooms, keep patients’ rooms neat, set up equipment, store and move supplies, and assist with some procedures.

VII. Record Coder
:
Overview:
Every time a patient receives health care, a record is maintained of the observations, medical or surgical interventions, and treatment outcomes. Medical records and health information technicians organise and evaluate these records for completeness and accuracy. Some medical records and health information technicians specialise in coding patients’ medical information. Technicians who specialise in coding are called health information coders, medical record coders, coder/abstractors, or coding specialists. These technicians assign a code to each diagnosis and procedure for insurance purpose. AKUH offer training programme for record coding to the student who did their MSc in physiology.

VIII. Cardiology Technologist:
Overview
Cardiovascular technologists and technicians assist physicians in diagnosing and treating cardiac (heart) and peripheral vascular (blood vessel) ailments. The curriculum includes; Cardiac Anatomy and Physiology, Instrumentation and Techniques, Clinical Non Invasive Cardio Vascular Procedures and Interpretation.

IX. Critical Care Technician:

For trainee critical care technician the candidate should at least FSc or FA qualified and has got nursing assistant training.

X. Biomedical Engineer:

For trainee biomedical engineer the candidate must have either a diploma or a graduate degree in electrical engineering.
